A fast read, this is a mix of historical fiction and detective story, with some familiar atmospherics from 1990s Sarajevo. The peregrinations of a 15th Century illuminated Haggadah are interspersed with chapters about the Australian book restoration expert who pieces together a plausible history amidst the international intrigue. Book restoration as action-hero career is a nice foil to soldier as sedentary bureaucrat.
